Affordable Vacations for You and the Children

No matter what part of this grand country you live in, there’s an affordable family vacation nearby that you’ve never even thought of. If you’re terrified of the rising gas prices and want to faint when you see the local theme parks’ admission fees, here are some family friendly trips they’ll leave everyone satisfied and keep your wallet intact.

Lakes & Beaches

Image via Flickr by cruiznbye

If you live within a few hours’ drive of the beach, this vacation doesn’t have to set you back half the kids’ college funds. For land bound families, nearby lakes and rivers offer many of the same opportunities. To make this an affordable vacation, book a vacation rental instead of a hotel. It’s cheaper to stay in most vacation rentals for a week than to put the family up in a hotel. Besides, all the family members have their own bedrooms.

Pack groceries or hit the grocery store once you check in and get settled. This saves money, but also means you don’t have to bathe and dress the kids every time someone gets hungry. Most vacation rentals include microwave ovens, so a few frozen dinners, snacks and drinks are all you need. Steer clear of the local money traps, such as amusement parks, miniature golf and clothing outlets. Let the water, beach and sun serve as entertainment.

Ranches & Farms

Every age kid from toddlers to teenagers enjoys animals. Many ranches and farms are open to day trips and some even allow week-long adventures. Depending on what type of farm or ranch you visit, you and the kids will likely get the chance to care for animals like horses, pigs, chickens, cows and goats. Other farms allow you to pick vegetables or fruits. All these adventures are hands-on ways for kids to learn where food comes from.

Some farms double as bed and breakfasts, but others may require you to get your own lodging offsite. Vacation rentals are another good option here, but there are also many inexpensive hotels to choose from. Since you’ll spend most of your days on the farm, you won’t need much except a place to bathe and sleep.

State & National Parks

Our government’s parks are generally well-kept, and offer the most beautiful scenery around. Some have lodges or cabins to rent affordably, and most offer campgrounds for tents and RVs. Depending on the park you visit, the family can enjoy activities like fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, sunbathing, staring at the stars and more. If you’re camping out, you can often rent equipment, which is cheaper than buying something you won’t use very often.

Caves

The best thing about visiting a cave is it doesn’t matter what the weather is like. Caves aren’t just cheap vacation spots, they’re ideal trips when the weather is too cold or hot. Caves are a comfortable temperature year round, and most welcome children of any age. Since caves are tourist attractions, there is almost always affordable lodging nearby, and restaurants galore.

There are lots of travel opportunities for families traveling on a budget. You just have to be open to all the possibilities around you, not just the obvious choices.

A Fabulous Break with the Kids in Bath

Bath is one of the UK’s most popular city-break destinations, and it’s easy to see why. Although Bath is famous for being a city full of history and culture, and somewhere you may not automatically think of as being child-friendly, it is actually the perfect place for the whole family to enjoy, and is a great place to stop if you’re planning a trip to the UK and you want to take in the best of British.

What is there in Bath?

Bath is a gorgeous city with world famous architecture, a wealth of history, more listed buildings than any other city in the country, and has even been labelled as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. If that’s not enough, Bath has an incredibly relaxed and vibrant atmosphere, and a huge array of activities to keep you and your family busy all day long.

The ever-popular hop-on hop-off tour buses that zip around the main attractions of the city are the quickest, easiest, and arguably most fun way to take in everything the city has to offer. Kids love sitting up-top the open top bus, although you have the option to take cover on the lower deck if you happen to be in Bath during a typical British downpour!

When in Bath, do as the Romans did! Whilst visiting the city, a definite must-see is the Roman Baths and Museum. Even better, you don’t have to worry about what to do with the kids, because the museum now has a “Meet the Romans” audioguide tour available, which will keep your little ones well and truly entertained.
If you’re lucky enough to get at least half-decent British weather while you’re there, check out Bath City Farm, a wonderful place for families to visit. Visitors can roam around the farm with the animals whenever you like, and the farm is free to all visitors, although, being a charitable organization, it does greatly appreciate and welcome any donation you can make.

The Best Restaurants in Baths

There are absolutely tonnes of restaurants to choose from in Bath, so it’s really easy to find something that will suit your whole family.  There is also a huge range of family-friendly establishments available that actively welcome and cater for kids. Check out Bath restaurants to see what the city has to offer and to make a booking online.

ASK Italian is a great, family-friendly restaurant with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.  It has a gorgeous selection of fine Italian cuisine, and so its menu is bound to cater for everyone. ASK Italian actively welcomes children, and provides colouring and activities sheets to keep the little ones amused.
Garfunkel’s is another excellent choice for families, and offers anything and everything from classic British favourites to international dishes. Considering its popularity and superb food it’s recommended that you book in advance for this one to avoid disappointment.

Cheap but Cheerful

Because it’s one of the UK’s most popular city destinations, Bath has an endless choice of hotels, bed and breakfasts and guesthouses to choose from, so it’s easy to find something both affordable and suitable for your family. It’s worth checking out YHA Bath, as not only is it an Italian-style mansion set in beautiful gardens, and is only 10 minutes’ walk from Bath city centre, there are also often offers available, so you may be able to bag yourself a fab deal.
