Why I’m glad some things never change

The other day at a friend’s barbecue, a few of us were discussing what our favourite foods were. It was interesting to see how each of our tastes has developed over time. Whilst just a few years ago, I’d have spat an olive out of my mouth immediately, I now see them as an essential accompaniment to any dinner table.

Anyway, the topic of conversation came back around to food we used to love. For instance, we all use to love fish fingers as youngsters, yet none of us has touched them for years. In the end, there was only one food which stuck out as something none of us had grown out of… Heinz Baked Beans. Finally, we managed to put some evidence to the old adage that some things never change and for once, I’m glad this is the case.

As we gorged on the huge bowl of beans which my friend Sally had insisted upon providing, we spoke for a surprisingly long time about the re-launch of the Heinz ad that’s currently on TV. We all agreed that it was ads like these that had kept us hooked on the good stuff, reminding us how our favourite snack is enjoyed by individuals of all ages.

What’s more, the ad seemed to prove our point that everybody, no matter what their age, seems to have a real soft spot for Heinz baked beans. Another point upon which we agreed with the ad was that Heinz is what make beans so great or, to put it as they do – Beanz Meanz Heinz!

It’s funny how small things like beans can become the topic of a passionate discussion amongst friends who haven’t seen each other for so long. We barely spoke of anything else –it was beans all the way for us!

Other key discovery coming out of our conversation was that although none of us used to like seeded bread, it has now become a favourite for all of us, as are plums! Other foods which have gone down in everybody’s estimation are peas, ketchup and marshmallows – failing to hold the same level of attraction and nutritional goodness that is offered by the humble baked bean.

High street shopping in the UK

In the run-up to the Royal Wedding last year, Kate Middleton – now Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge – was spotted in the high street grabbing a few bargains. Indeed, Catherine, who has now become a bona fide style icon, continues to look for high street deals despite her dramatic rise in the world. This is just one slice of proof that the UK’s main shopping drags have become acknowledged sources of sartorial variety and quality. Having a reliable range of brands readily available in every town in the country should be viewed as a great source of national pride.

But it isn’t just the familiar brands that are making us reach for our purses: one key strength of the UK high street lies in the fact that smaller, boutique stores have been given a fantastic chance to grow and become well-known in their own right.

Shopping figures have shown strong patterns of growth in the last couple of years, and as more and more shoppers hit the pavements looking for the perfect gift, a combination of sophisticated store design staffed by well-trained and knowledgeable professionals has continued to make a big difference to consumers’ shopping experience.

Retail adviser and TV favourite Mary Portas was appointed last year by the government to publish a report on the high street with recommendations for the future of UK shopping. It is partly down to her influence that high street newcomers now understand the importance of creating unique spaces and experiences, intended to reflect the values of the brand and its consumers.

Shoppers are continuing to hit the streets, despite the recent rise in online retail spending, because they know that the shopping experience is increasingly in their hands. Shops increasingly cater for a range of purposes and scenarios, so whether you want to be in and out in a hurry or if you’re keen to make a day of it with friends or family, your intentions will be more than likely catered for.

With American Express rewards cards, for example the Platinum Card, you can earn points while you shop for that perfect outfit or gift in many of the UK’s high street stores. The benefits available on cards like these provide just one more example of how our high streets will continue to remain vibrant and innovative in years to come.

Night Shift

Thanks for the guest post by Jonathan Curtis

I just agreed to start working the late shift. This will be my first night working the late shift. I’m going in at 7 pm and getting off at 4 am. I took a nap this afternoon, and drank a big Red Bull, so I should be good to go. I’m sure I will be beat tomorrow, but I can sleep all day tomorrow if I want. I wouldn’t have agreed to the night shift if it wasn’t for the money. The pay is quite a bit better, I guess because no one wants to do it. I will miss my evening routine of watching my favorite shows, though. I figured out how to set my DIRECTV DVR to record them all for me, so I can watch them when I feel like it tomorrow. I think all in all, it will be okay and I won’t mind the late shift after all. My girlfriend lives out of town for the next few months, so this is the perfect time for me to be doing it.

Grew up in Texas

This guest post from Doris Dillon

I don’t know how I didn’t know this before, since I grew up in Texas, but it turns out we have the ability to select our energy providers from multiple options. It’s a great way to save a little money every month! I guess I wasn’t as concerned about things like this before I moved out on my own, but I’m so glad I made this discovery. I’ve actually recommended making a change to my parents, as well. While they’re not forced to live as frugally as I am, it’s obviously nice for anyone to be able to save a little money! It’s so easy to Shop electricity rates texas—it involves basically no effort, and it’s such a relief to know that I have a little extra money each month to cover my expenses. I have told a bunch of my friends who recently moved out on their own, too. I don’t think any of us were ready for just how expensive it is just to live these days…it definitely gives me a better appreciation for what my parents must have gone through having to provide for my family. I can barely cut it just providing for myself!
